HBO - A breakthrough

After the motion was slaughtered at the composite committee (see above), we took our fight to Home Box Office. The following is our exchange (spoilers: they lent us their axe... getting my references confused I know)

Dear Mr. Bowater,

Thank you for your email. HBO does not object to the proposed name of “Warwick SU Khal/Khaleesi” to be used to represent the title of Warwick SU President at the University of Warwick, UK, provided that:

·         None of you, the University, or any affiliated group use the HBO or Game of Thrones names or logos, or any performer likenesses, in connection with this use;
·         None of you, the University, or any affiliated group make any commercial exploitation of Khal” or “Khaleesi,” for example, on t-shirts, posters, or notebooks; and
·         The names are used only in connection with the University.

We do appreciate you reaching out through the appropriate channels with this request and wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

Sincerely,
HBO Consumer Affairs

Sir/Madam

My name is Aaron Bowater, I am a post-graduate student at the University of Warwick, UK, and I need your help. As a passionate fan of all things Game of Thrones, several other students and I attempted, through our democratic procedures, to change the title of Warwick SU President to Warwick SU Khal/Khaleesi.

We collected, with ease, more than the 256 required signatures (find attached) to take the motion to an all-student referendum and needless to say, this frustrated the minority of students who felt the venture frivolous. As a result, and before we could take it before a referendum I am certain we would have won, it was thrown out.

The reasons given, by the composite committee who screen any motions before they go to referendum, were concerns around the legal costs of yourselves if the change rendered us in breach of copyright.

As a not-for-profit organisation, this change would have zero economic benefit for ourselves. The motion was proposed as a bit of fun and as a way of highlighting students would vote in force for anything Game of Thrones related, as opposed to the usual Student politics nonsense normally put before the campus. Whilst it would doubtless generate publicity for the union, it would more than generate interest around Game of Thrones before its return to our screens next series.

In short, we need your help.

I am unable to attach the motion but a copy of this letter, as well as the motion and petition to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. in the hope of hearing from someone soon.

I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Yours Sincerely

Aaron Bowater
